Two buildings with fascinating history were both destroyed in 1989. The large building in the center was Temple Beth Israel, which was later rebuilt. However, the building burned in 1989 shortly before the earthquake.

Albert Pike Scottish Rite Temple was rebuilt and later sold to the Rev. Jim Jones who occupied it as Peoples Temple. It was from here he led members of his congregation to their doom in Jonestown. Peoples Temple was later sold to a Korean church, damaged during the 1989 earthquake, and demolished.

The wooden fence encloses the lot that would later become Majestic Hall, and then the Fillmore Auditorium at Fillmore and Geary streets.
